Protesters in Yemen rally for Hamas leader Sinwar
Thousands of protesters, mainly Houthi supporters, rallied in Yemen's capital Sanaa to commemorate the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during an operation by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip.
The rally saw demonstrators chanting slogans and holding posters of Sinwar, while large billboard screens displayed his image.
Protesters, including children, were seen holding rifles, while others waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags.
Sinwar, the architect of Hamas' deadly Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the conflict in Gaza, was killed in a gunfight with Israeli forces after a year-long manhunt.
Sinwar's own words in previous speeches, saying he would rather die at Israel's hands than from a heart attack or car accident, have been repeatedly shared by Palestinians online.
A delegation of Arab ambassadors to the United Nations stressed the dangers of a large scale genocide in northern Gaza, based on reports that Israel intends to seal the area by declaring it a military zone.
“Whoever remains there is a military target, which means that if that is to be implemented, then there is a danger of seeing larger number of extermination of Palestinians beyond and above what happened during the first year,” said Riyad Mansour, the permanent observer for the state of Palestine to the United Nations.
Mansour ordered the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire.
The attack Sinwar planned on Israeli communities a year ago killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, with another 253 dragged back to Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
Israel's subsequent war has devastated Gaza, killing more than 42,000 Palestinians, with another 10,000 uncounted dead thought to lie under the rubble, say Gaza health authorities.
