Alcaraz wins Italian Open final in Rome
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in the Italian Open final with a score of 7-6(5), 6-1, ending Sinner's impressive 26-match winning streak. The match took place at Rome's Foro Italico, where a packed Centre Court witnessed a tightly contested first set that culminated in a tiebreak, which Alcaraz narrowly won. However, the second set saw Alcaraz dominate, breaking Sinner's serve multiple times to secure a decisive victory.
This win marks Alcaraz's first Italian Open title and his seventh ATP Masters 1000 title, solidifying his status as a leading contender for the upcoming French Open. With this victory, Alcaraz has now defeated Sinner in their last four encounters, extending his head-to-head lead to 7-4.
Sinner, returning from a three-month suspension, aimed to become the first Italian man to win the Rome title since 1976. Despite the loss, reaching the final was a significant achievement in his comeback. Alcaraz's performance in Rome, along with his earlier victory in Monte Carlo, underscores his dominance on clay this season. At just 22 years old, he has already claimed 19 career titles and is viewed as a strong favorite to defend his title at Roland Garros.
In addition to the trophy, Alcaraz earned €980,030 in prize money, while Sinner received €523,870 as the runner-up. The Italian Open also saw Jasmine Paolini win the women's title, preventing an Italian sweep of the singles championships.
