Pro-abortion activists gathered outside Mexico City's Congress to support a new legislative initiative aimed at fully decriminalizing abortion in the capital. The proposal seeks to eliminate Penal Code articles that currently restrict pregnancy termination after 12 weeks, marking a significant shift from the city's 2007 law that first decriminalized abortion up to 12 weeks.

Demonstrators wearing green handkerchiefs, symbolizing the abortion rights movement, advocated for bodily autonomy while anti-abortion groups staged counter-protests nearby, expressing concerns about women's health.

The Mexican Catholic bishops' conference, led by Archbishop Rogelio Cabrera López and Bishop Ramón Castro Castro, issued a strong statement opposing the initiative, warning it could lead to unrestricted abortion access throughout Mexico. They argued the proposal undermines fundamental human rights and expressed concern about its potential nationwide impact.

On November 4, Mexico City assembly commissions voted to remove abortion from the criminal code, eliminating previous penalties of three to six months imprisonment or community service. This development follows the Supreme Court's 2023 decision effectively decriminalizing abortion nationwide until the 12th week of pregnancy.

The political landscape surrounding abortion rights has evolved significantly, with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Morena party pushing for decriminalization, while traditional pro-life advocates, including the conservative National Action Party, have shown less resistance than in previous years.

The bishops pledged continued support for those affected by abortion while maintaining their position that the right to life transcends political ideology. Meanwhile, conservative think tank director Alicia Galván noted a shift in traditional pro-life political advocacy, suggesting political pressure has influenced party positions on the issue.
