The 37th Annual 17th Street High Heel Race took place in Washington, D.C., drawing dozens of LGBTQ community members and allies in a celebration that mixed tradition with political commentary ahead of the November 5 presidential election.

The event, hosted by Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs, featured at least 150 registered participants competing in the iconic race along 17th Street NW. The festivities began at 5:00 p.m., led by local drag superstar Cake Pop! and Tara Hoot, with music by DJ Alex Love.

This year's race took on political overtones, with participants incorporating election themes into their costumes. Some dressed as "childless cat ladies," referencing controversial comments made by JD Vance, Trump's running mate, about Vice President Kamala Harris in 2021. Others wore attire supporting Harris, including gowns with banners reading "Inaugural Ball, President Kamala Harris, January 20th, 2025."

What started over three decades ago as a friendly wager between drag queens has evolved into one of the country's only government-sponsored events of its kind. The celebration included costume contests with categories such as Best Costume, Best Heels, Most Innovative, and Most DC Spirit, featuring performances by Urban Couture, Cheer DC, and DC's Different Drummers.

The event holds particular significance as Washington, D.C. prepares to host WorldPride 2025, scheduled for May 17 through June 8, 2025. The city's selection as host demonstrates its commitment to LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion, with plans for extensive programming including music, film, and sports events across iconic locations. The celebration will feature global superstar Shakira as the official headliner on May 31.

The race also highlighted the city's ongoing support for the LGBTQIA+ community, including plans for a new LGBTQ+ Community Center in the Shaw neighborhood.
