Spain once again has an ambassador in Venezuela
The diplomat Ramón Santos Martínez delivered the credentials as the new ambassador of Spain in Venezuela, a position vacant since 2020 due to diplomatic tensions that have arisen between the European country and the government of Nicolás Maduro.
Images broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión, the government channel, showed the arrival of Santos Martínez at the Miraflores presidential palace where he was received with a hall of honour to later meet with the Venezuelan president.
"I received the Letters of Credence from the Designated Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Venezuela, Ramón Santos Martínez. We continue to strengthen and deepen ties of cooperation and respect. Let's keep moving forward!" President Maduro said.
Spain joined the fifty countries that supported the opposition Juan Guaidó, who in 2019 proclaimed himself interim president, then invoking his status as head of Parliament, after considering Maduro's re-election in 2018 "fraudulent".
Silva had been accused by the Maduro government of facilitating the departure to Spain of Leopoldo López, from the radical wing of the Venezuelan opposition.
Santos Martínez held the position of Chargé d'Affaires in Venezuela since November 2021, the highest diplomatic representation in the country since the position of ambassador became vacant.
