FIFA Plans 2030 World Cup in Paraguay
A FIFA delegation was received by the Paraguayan president, Santiago Peña, and the soccer authorities of the South American country in preparation for the organization of the 2030 World Cup, which will host a match in Asunción.
"We are here as part of a technical visit. Our objective in the coming months is to understand how they want to organize, what is needed to do it, both in the bid and in the organization" of the World Cup, said FIFA spokesman Nicolás Rosemberg.
The 2030 World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay will host the initial matches of their national teams.
Before Paraguay, the FIFA delegation had visited the other two South American countries.
The emissary and four other representatives of the soccer parent company were also received by Alejandro Domínguez, the head of the South American Soccer Confederation (Conmebol), and the president of the Paraguayan Soccer Association (APF), Robert Harrison.
The mayor of Asunción, Oscar Rodríguez, and the Minister of Sports, César Ramírez, also participated in the meeting.
The 2030 World Cup will be the first to be held on three continents between 48 teams.
"It's great to see all the stakeholders at the table. This shows the unity of the country behind this project," Rosemberg said.
The president of Paraguay said that his country "will be proud" to be part of the World Cup venues and that his Government was committed to preparing the infrastructure required by FIFA.
"By joining forces with Argentina and Uruguay, the World Cup will become a reality in South America," said Domínguez, who thanked FIFA for accepting that the continent deserved to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup that was hosted in Uruguay in 1930.
