Indian PM Modi Meets Polish President During Warsaw Visit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Polish president Andrzej Duda, on the last day of his visit to Warsaw.
Earlier in the day he met with his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk. Modi is visiting Warsaw en route to Kyiv, where he has said he will "share perspectives" on the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The trip follows his July 8-9 visit to Moscow which drew criticism from the US and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as it coincided with a lethal Russian strike on a children's hospital in Kyiv.
Military cooperation between the two countries was high on the agenda for the first visit to Warsaw by an Indian PM in 45 years, officials said.
Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters since Russia's 2022 invasion, while India has remained neutral.
New Delhi had historically relied heavily on Moscow for defense supplies but in recent years has sought to
diversify, a process that has intensified since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Modi said that India is willing to offer its help to end the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
"Friends, the situation prevailing in Ukraine and West Asia is a matter of deep concern for all of us. India firmly believes that no conflict or problem can be resolved on the battlefield," Modi added.
Tusk praised Modi's engagement and said that he was convinced India could play a positive role.
"I am very glad that the Prime Minister Modi confirmed readiness to engage personally in a peaceful, just and quick end to the war in Ukraine," He said.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Poland is the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in the past 45 years.
