Audi starts EV production at new China plant
Audi FAW NEV Company has launched production of its first all-electric vehicles in Changchun, China, marking a significant milestone in Audi's electrification strategy. The new state-of-the-art facility, established in partnership with FAW, is China's first plant dedicated exclusively to producing fully electric Audi models based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE).
Production begins with the Q6L e-tron family, including the Q6L Sportback e-tron, with a China-specific version of the Audi A6 e-tron to follow. The vehicles feature market-specific design elements, including a longer wheelbase and specialized digital experiences for Chinese consumers.
The facility, which commenced construction in mid-2022, represents cutting-edge manufacturing technology, featuring over 800 robots and an industry-leading automation rate in its body shop. The plant employs digital twinning and integrated IT solutions, including the first implementation of SAP S/4HANA in the Volkswagen Group outside Europe.
With a planned annual production capacity exceeding 150,000 vehicles and around 3,000 new jobs, the facility encompasses complete automotive production capabilities, including press shop, body shop, paint shop, vehicle assembly, and battery assembly for China-specific PPE models.
Environmental sustainability is a core focus, with the plant targeting net carbon neutrality from the start. It operates on green energy, utilizing solar panels covering 320,000 square meters and biomass-sourced heating. The facility implements closed-loop systems for waste and water management, while maintaining biodiversity through extensive landscaping and wildlife preservation initiatives.
The project emphasizes local integration, with approximately 50% of suppliers located within 30 kilometers of the plant, supported by a dedicated supplier park.
