Video Shows Alleged Attack on Ex-Rector in Mexico
Mexican prosecutors released a surveillance video allegedly showing a shooting attack on former Sinaloa University rector and politician Hector Cuen, who has been linked to Sinaloa Cartel founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada.
The video, dated July 25, depicts an incident at a gas station in Culiacan, western Mexico, where a couple on a motorcycle approached Cuen's vehicle, with one person alighting to open the car door and fire at an individual inside.
The surveillance footage shows the motorcyclists fleeing as Cuen's vehicle sped away. According to Sinaloa prosecutors, the incident was an attempted carjacking. However, in a letter released this week, Zambada claimed Cuen had been killed earlier that day after a meeting with him and Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya.
The video disseminated by the prosecutor's office does not explicitly show the altercation or shooting or the occupants of the vehicle. However, it appears to suggest a direct attack against Cuen.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has called for an investigation into the case to "stop speculation and rash conclusions."
"There are at least two versions, and on the video, there is another one, the declaration of the driver and the letter from Zambada. The Mexican prosecutor's office has the case so that Mexicans can know what really happened to stop speculation and rash conclusions," he added.
The video's release is part of an attempt by Mexican prosecutors to refute claims that Cuen was killed in Culiacan after the U.S. authorities captured Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of Zambada's former partner Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
