The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and NBCUniversal have agreed to a landmark $3 billion extension of their U.S. Olympic media rights partnership through 2036, transforming their relationship from a traditional broadcasting deal into a strategic alliance. The extension builds on NBCUniversal's position as the IOC's largest revenue source and ensures continued coverage of the Games in the United States for another four years beyond their previous agreement.

This comprehensive deal covers all media platforms in the United States, including the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Olympics, whose host city has yet to be determined. The extension comes at a time of financial strength for the IOC, which has already secured $7.3 billion in revenue for 2025-2028 and $6.2 billion for 2029-2032.

Beyond traditional broadcasting rights, the partnership includes collaborative projects focused on technology infrastructure, in-venue live TV coverage distribution, and digital advertising opportunities. NBCUniversal will also assist Olympic Broadcasting Services in producing the Olympic Video Player, reflecting the growing importance of digital platforms in sports coverage.

Streaming service Peacock will play an increasingly central role in Olympic coverage, building on its success during the 2024 Paris Olympics when NBCUniversal reached an average of 67 million viewers daily across all platforms. Peacock led a 40% increase in streaming compared to all previous Olympic Games combined.

The announcement comes just days before the IOC's presidential election on March 20, where a successor to Thomas Bach will be chosen after his 12-year tenure. Bach leaves the organization in a strong financial position, with this deal further cementing the IOC's economic stability.
