Israeli police disperse protest demanding end to settler attacks on Palestinians
Israeli police disperse dozens of demonstrators protesting in Tel Aviv to demand an end to attacks by settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. Dozens of Israeli settlers set homes and cars ablaze in the northern town of Huwara, after a day of Israeli-Palestinian talks in neighbouring Jordan aimed at quelling escalating unrest in the Palestinian territory.
Hundreds of Israelis are protesting in central Tel Aviv against the settlers’ rampage in the West Bank town of Howrah in which a Palestinian man was killed and dozens were wounded.
Police arrested a 19-year-old man from central Israel after allegedly spraying pepper spray at protesters, injuring two people.
Some of the protesters reportedly marched towards the Kaplan junction in central Tel Aviv – the location of many of the recent anti-judicial overhaul mass protests – and blocked traffic.
Two of the protesters who refused to disperse were reportedly arrested by police.
Standing Together, a grassroots group promoting Jewish and Arab equality and partnership who are among the demonstration’s organisers, said that “The pogrom in Hawara is directly encouraged by the government.
The violence came hours after two Israeli settlers -- brothers Yagel Yaniv, 20, and Hallel Yaniv, 22 -- were shot dead as they drove through Huwara.
