Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has met with Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi who is on an official visit to Tehran amid increased tensions in the West Asian region.

The two diplomats held talks in the capital Tehran to discuss the recent spike in tensions in the region as well as bilateral relations.

Bagheri Kani emphasized the principled position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in developing close ties with neighboring and Muslim countries.

Bagheri Kani further stressed that the enemies of the Muslim world are trying to turn differences into disputes and disputes into conflicts in the region and that Iran is striving to counter them by pursuing a policy of good neighborliness with utmost seriousness.

“The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who was a religious thinker, Quran memorizer, prominent politician of the Arab world, a great Palestinian figure and a great leader of the Islamic resistance, is an act against all standards of international law and custom,” he said.

In a meeting with Safadi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the assassination of Haniyeh was a "major mistake by the Zionist regime (Israel) that will not go unanswered."

Safadi's visit to Iran follows continued diplomatic contacts by the United States and its partners including France, Britain, Italy and Egypt to prevent further regional escalation following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Iran and Jordan are also seeking to improve their relations following recent tensions related to Amman accusing pro-Iranian militias in Syria of smuggling narcotics into the country, and it's taking part in the interception of Iran's first-ever direct attack on Israel last April.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement earlier in the day that Safadi will also deliver a message from King Abdullah II to the Iranian president on “the situation in the region and bilateral relations.”
