Hospital for the covid of Peru closes after discharging the last patient
The Villa Panamericana de Lima, which became an emblematic emergency hospital when the covid-19 pandemic broke out in Peru in 2020, closed its doors after discharging the last of its patients, the Social Security of Health reported.
"Today with the discharge of this patient, we can say the task has been accomplished," the president of social security, Gino Dávila, told the press.
"For us it is part of the symbol of having overcome this stage of the pandemic," he added.
The official highlighted that between March 2020 and October 2022, the hospital treated 61,321 people infected with covid-19. In that period 440 people died in the centre.
The hospital, a gigantic complex made up of six towers that housed thousands of athletes at the 2019 Pan American Games, served as an emergency centre in the face of the public health crisis that the pandemic unleashed.
Its facilities, which had 2,800 beds, are located in the populous district of Villa El Salvador, south of the Peruvian capital.
"I just found out that I am the last patient. I feel happy because I am better now, I no longer have covid-19, but at the same time I am going to miss the good treatment I received," said Nilda Chamilco.
Peru has accumulated more than 216,877 deaths from covid-19 and 4.1 million infections since March 2020. Its population is 33 million.
