Libyans rally for Gaza amid Israeli advance

In a show of solidarity with Gaza, protesters gathered in the streets of Misrata, Libya, adding to the growing demonstrations across the country supporting Palestinians.
This comes as Israeli forces expanded their control in northern Gaza, days after announcing plans for a large-scale operation in the southern part of the enclave. Israel resumed military operations on March 18 following a two-month pause during which 38 hostages were returned in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The United Nations Humanitarian Agency OCHA reports that over 280,000 people have been displaced in Gaza in the past two weeks alone, exacerbating the suffering of families who have already faced multiple displacements during the 18-month conflict.
Libya has consistently demonstrated support for Palestinians throughout the conflict. In October 2023, hundreds gathered in Tripoli's Martyrs' Square following a strike on a Gaza hospital. Protests also occurred in November 2023 and again in August 2023 after reports of a meeting between Libyan and Israeli foreign ministers.
As recently as November 2024, Libyan youth organized rallies in Tripoli's Algeria Square, displaying Palestinian flags and condemning Israeli actions. Libyan students have also organized university demonstrations against Israeli military operations.
The Libyan government has taken an official stance as well, with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah condemning Israeli actions and calling for Arab leaders to take a firm position. Libya's Dar al-Ifta encouraged directing religious donations to Gaza, highlighting the humanitarian crisis.
These actions reflect Libya's longstanding commitment to the Palestinian cause, as citizens continue to advocate for Palestinian rights and condemn violence against them.
