Iran warns over Hormuz blockade

Mohammad Mokhber calls U.S. threat a miscalculation

Iran warns over Hormuz blockade

According to a report by Al Mayadeen, Mohammad Mokhber, senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, has strongly dismissed US threats of a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz as an “illusion” and a grave strategic miscalculation. In a post on X, he argued a blockade is unachievable and warned it would trigger “new surprises” and “new fronts” against the US and its allies, signaling Tehran could respond with asymmetric measures that would broaden and intensify the conflict beyond the region.

Mokhber directly targeted US President Donald Trump, portraying him as weakened by failed policies and standing at a crossroads with only two options: “either to accept defeat or to endure it.” Given Mokhber’s proximity to Iran’s highest leadership, his remarks are seen as a calibrated message from the core of the country’s power structure rather than mere personal opinion.

The comments arrive amid heightened US–Iran tensions centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow chokepoint through which a significant share of the world’s seaborne oil transits. Tehran has long asserted both the capability and willingness to disrupt traffic in the strait if it perceives existential threats, and analysts warn that any attempt to restrict passage would have immediate repercussions for global energy markets, regional stability, and the interests of multiple states, risking a costly and unpredictable confrontation.
