London launches first autonomous ride service
Uber, with British startup Wayve, launched the UK's first autonomous ride-hailing service in London. This marks a significant milestone in self-driving technology. The service allows passengers to experience supervised autonomous rides through the Uber app.The service uses all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, equipped with Wayve's advanced AI Driver technology. These vehicles operate with a trained driver onboard, who supervises the journey and can take control. Wayve's 'AV2.0' approach uses an AI Driver that learns from real-world driving experience, adapting to complex urban environments like London without traditional high-definition maps or pre-coded rules. The company has tested its autonomous driving technology on London's challenging streets since 2018.Passengers in Greater London can request a Wayve-powered vehicle when booking an UberX, Electric, or Comfort ride. They can accept the autonomous ride or choose a conventional vehicle at no additional cost. Over 140,000 Londoners have expressed interest by opting in through the Uber app's ride preferences. Vehicles include an interactive screen where riders can initiate their trip and monitor the planned route.This London launch is part of a broader Uber and Wayve partnership, aiming to expand autonomous ride services to 12 markets globally. The collaboration plans to introduce Nissan LEAF vehicles, powered by the Wayve AI Driver, in Tokyo later this year. The introduction of self-driving vehicles highlights advancements in artificial intelligence and its potential to transform urban mobility.
