Russian air strike kills civilians in Kyiv
At least two people were killed and 52 others wounded in a Russian air strike on Kyiv, according to local officials. The attack targeted the central Solomyanskiy district, where residents gathered outside their apartment buildings as firefighters battled blazes. City military administrator Tymur Tkachenko indicated that the death toll could rise, noting damage across more than two dozen locations.
Russia launched a combined drone and missile assault on Kyiv, striking 27 sites across four districts. The attack resulted in at least six fatalities, including a six-year-old boy, and left numerous injuries. Residential buildings, schools, and hospitals were severely damaged, with emergency teams continuing to search for victims under the rubble. Ukrainian officials emphasized that these strikes appear to deliberately target civilian infrastructure.
This incident follows a series of intense assaults in recent weeks. A previous strike on the Darnytskyi district injured eight people, including a three-year-old child, after Russia deployed 324 drones and seven missiles. Earlier in July, a major drone and missile attack killed two and injured fifteen, damaging civilian facilities like a kindergarten and a supermarket.
In early July, Kyiv experienced what was described as the largest air raid since the full-scale invasion began, with a record number of drones and missiles causing widespread destruction and casualties. Throughout June and July, Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv, with one strike in mid-June resulting in around 30 deaths and over 170 injuries.
In response to the escalating violence, President Zelenskyy and military leaders have called for urgent reinforcement of air defenses. U.S. and European partners, including NATO officials, have pledged additional support, including the delivery of Patriot missile systems and other armaments to enhance Kyiv's protection.
