53rd International Eucharistic Congress Opens in Quito
The 53rd International Eucharistic Congress began in Quito, Ecuador, with a focus on building fraternity to heal global wounds. The event, running until September 15, carries the theme "Fraternity to Heal the World" and aims to promote unity in a divided world.
Pope Francis sent a message emphasizing the importance of unity in serving and healing the world. Archbishop Alfredo Espinoza of Quito described Quito as "a great eucharistic tent" during his homily at the opening Mass, which saw 1,600 children receiving their first Communion.
The congress was preceded by a theological symposium and features daily themes addressing global issues. These include discussions on wounded societies, building brotherhood, the transformative power of the Eucharist, synodality, and the connection between the Eucharist and fraternity.
Speakers from various backgrounds will address the congress, including Quito Mayor Pabel Muñoz, Ukrainian Bishop Hryhoriy Komar, and Bishop Andrew H. Cozzens of Crookston, Minnesota, who is organizing the 2024 U.S. National Eucharistic Congress.
The event has drawn participants from 60 nations, with a particular Latin American and Ecuadorian focus. Father Juan Carlos Garzón, secretary-general of the congress, highlighted the region's unique contribution to promoting fraternity and addressing societal wounds.
The congress coincides with the 150th anniversary of Ecuador's consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, adding spiritual significance to the event. It will conclude with a Eucharistic procession through Quito's old central district on September 14 and a closing Mass on September 15.
This marks the first International Eucharistic Congress in Latin America since 2004, highlighting its importance for the region's Catholic community and its potential impact on addressing local and global challenges through faith-based unity and action.
