Russian overnight attacks hit Kyiv, Kharkiv
Russian forces conducted multiple overnight attacks on Ukraine's two largest cities, resulting in at least four deaths and four injuries. The attacks targeted both Kharkiv and Kyiv, causing significant damage to residential areas and historic landmarks.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, four people were killed after midnight during bombardment of the Osnovianskyi district, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. This attack followed an earlier strike that severely damaged the historic Derzhprom building, a celebrated 1920s landmark.
In Kyiv, debris from a destroyed Russian drone injured four people and ignited a fire in a residential building in the Solomianskyi district. One injured person required hospitalization, reported Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Witnesses observed smoke rising over the residential area, and photos shared by Kyiv's military administration showed burning buildings and vehicles.
The capital's air defense units worked to repel the drone attack, with debris also falling in the Sviatoshynskyi district, though no immediate damage was reported there. Emergency services were seen searching through rubble.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service released videos showing rescuers combing through the wreckage of damaged buildings.
While the full scale of the overnight attacks remains unclear, they represent the latest chapter in the ongoing 2½-year conflict that has claimed thousands of lives, predominantly Ukrainian, and reduced numerous cities and villages to rubble. Moscow continues to deny targeting civilians in the war that began with Russia's invasion in February 2022.
The attacks demonstrate the continuing intensity of the conflict and its devastating impact on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and population, as both cities struggle to protect their residents and historic landmarks from ongoing military aggression.
