Bulgaria received its first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet from the United States at the Graf Ignatievo air base, marking a significant advancement in modernizing its air force to align with NATO standards.

Bulgaria's acquisition of the F-16s began with a 2019 agreement to purchase eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft for $1.3 billion. Although initial plans scheduled the first deliveries for 2023, the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays. In 2022, Bulgaria secured an additional contract with Lockheed Martin for eight more jets, bringing the total to 16, with deliveries expected to be completed by 2027.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov emphasized the strategic importance of this delivery, stating, "This is not just a fighter jet, but a symbol and embodiment of Bulgaria's strategic partnership with the United States, a partnership that offers a new perspective for the Bulgarian Army."

"This is the first bird of the flock, which by the end of the year will number eight of these wonderful aircraft. This bird came together with the instructor, who in the next two years will help all of you in mastering the skills."

Since joining NATO in 2004, Bulgaria has aimed to replace its aging Soviet-era MiG-29 aircraft. Financial constraints had previously delayed these modernization efforts. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has heightened regional security concerns, leading Bulgaria to rely on NATO allies for air policing. The introduction of the F-16s is anticipated to significantly enhance Bulgaria's defense capabilities and reduce dependence on external support.

The F-16 Block 70 variant offers advanced avionics, improved radar systems, and enhanced weapon capabilities, representing a substantial upgrade over Bulgaria's current fleet. This modernization aligns with NATO's strategic objectives and demonstrates Bulgaria's commitment to fulfilling its alliance obligations.
