A day after widespread protests erupted across Kenya, business owners in Nairobi's city center are assessing the damage from looting and arson that occurred during the unrest. Footage reveals charred storefronts and distraught shopkeepers, with some estimating losses in the thousands of dollars. The violence was triggered by demonstrations marking the anniversary of last year's deadly anti-government protests, reignited by the suspicious death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody.

Ojwang's death, following his arrest for criticizing a senior police official online, sparked public outrage and demands for justice. The protests, primarily led by youth, escalated into violent confrontations with security forces across 23 of Kenya's 47 counties, resulting in at least 16 fatalities, mostly from police gunfire, and over 400 injuries. More than 60 individuals were arrested as protesters attempted to breach government buildings, including Parliament and the President's office. The government condemned the unrest as "terrorism disguised as dissent" and imposed a media blackout, removing major broadcasters from the air.

The economic impact has been severe, particularly in Nairobi's Central Business District, where numerous businesses were looted and set ablaze. Sunbeam Mall was completely destroyed, affecting over 700 stalls, while major retailers like Naivas and Quickmart also suffered extensive damage. The Nairobi Youth Business Community estimates property losses at around KSh 3 billion (approximately $23 million).

The protests were largely organized by Generation Z activists on social media, continuing the momentum from last year's demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024. Despite President William Ruto's earlier concessions, including vetoing the controversial tax bill, public dissatisfaction remains high due to ongoing economic hardships and perceived government corruption. In response to the unrest, the government has deployed additional security forces and pledged to investigate the incidents.
