Syrian Airlines resumes Damascus-Moscow flights
Syrian Airlines has resumed direct flights between Damascus and Moscow after an eighteen-month suspension. The first passenger flight landed in Moscow on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with the return flight returning to Damascus later that day. Flights were suspended in December 2024 due to Syria's political situation and operational challenges at the airport. The route operates weekly on Sundays, using an Airbus A320 between Damascus and Moscow. This strengthens air connectivity, expands travel options, and broadens Damascus's destination network. The link benefits the Syrian community in Russia and fosters closer ties across business, scientific, and cultural sectors. This resumption aligns with Syrian Airlines' strategy to rebuild its international presence and reconnect Syria. The airline has progressively restored its network, including routes to the Persian Gulf, North Africa, and some European destinations. Other European routes, like Berlin and Amsterdam, have also resumed or been announced after over a decade of suspension. This initial weekly frequency is typical for rebuilding long-haul connections.Despite these developments, many Western governments advise against travel to Syria. They cite persistent concerns regarding armed conflict, political instability, and limited consular assistance. Nonetheless, the reopening of the Damascus-Moscow air corridor signifies a notable effort by Syria to normalize international aviation links and enhance bilateral relations. The resumed flight path includes airspace of Türkiye, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
