Vatican Pope Leo urges global migrant child action
Pope Leo issued an appeal from the Vatican, urging global action to safeguard child migrants enduring immense suffering. During his weekly general audience, he lamented that migrant and refugee children frequently encounter violence, torture, exploitation, and traumatic conditions fleeing their home countries, often exacerbated by a lack of legal protections and safe passage. His plea precedes the Catholic Church's 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees this Sunday. Its theme, "Even just one of these children," underscores the dignity of every young life, emphasizing that no child should be overlooked or forgotten. Pope Leo emphasized the world must not be indifferent to their plight or reduce their suffering to statistics. He stressed a child's protection is paramount, safeguarding the divine image, a fundamental principle of human dignity. The Vatican leader called for everyone to embrace responsibility, urging individuals and institutions to become involved. He implored countries of origin to address root causes, and transit/destination countries to offer robust protection. Pope Leo, a consistent advocate, focused on universal responsibility rather than naming specific countries. United Nations estimates show 45 million children were forcibly displaced globally by the end of 2025. This figure means children constitute 39 percent of all refugees, highlighting their vulnerability. The Pope reiterated an urgent shift is necessary, from managing migration flows to ensuring full human rights protection for every child. Christian communities are also called to integrate and value these children.
