Gaza holds mass funeral for 105 Palestinians

Hundreds of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City for a mass funeral for 105 individuals whose remains were recently recovered from beneath destroyed residential buildings. Bodies, wrapped in Palestinian flags, were interred in the Martyrs Cemetery in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. Among those recovered were 37 children and 38 women. These victims had been trapped under the rubble for nearly three years, following Israeli airstrikes in October 2023 that leveled 16 residential buildings in the Al-Taj area of the Al-Yarmouk district. Local civil defense teams, supported by Egyptian technical personnel and the International Committee of the Red Cross, undertook a challenging 17-day recovery operation. The recovery of these 105 bodies represents one of the largest such operations since the conflict began, but it underscores a much larger tragedy. Palestinian authorities estimate that 8,000 to 10,000 bodies still remain trapped beneath rubble across the Gaza Strip. The ongoing recovery effort faces immense challenges, including a shortage of heavy equipment and volume of debris. Families continue a painful wait for closure, hoping to locate and provide dignified burials for loved ones. The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by this ongoing challenge, as communities grapple with profound loss and widespread destruction. The international community has called for increased support for recovery efforts, emphasizing the need to address thousands of missing individuals and overwhelming task of clearing devastated areas. This funeral serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring human cost of the protracted conflict.
