Crowds mourn victims of U.S. Israeli strikes

Mass funeral held for Iran commanders

Tens of thousands of mourners surged into the streets of the Iranian capital, to attend the funeral of military commanders and children killed in recent joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel.

Funeral convoys carrying the remains of Iran’s top military arrived at Enqelab Square. Among those honored were several of the nation’s most prominent defense figures: former armed forces chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammad Pakpour, former Defense Council chief Ali Shamkhani, Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Aziz Nasirzadeh, and Maj. Gen. Mohammad Shirazi, Head of the Office of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

The coffins of several children, also killed in the aerial campaigns, were placed alongside those of the commanders. Grieving crowds, many in tears, accompanied the procession while chanting slogans against the United States, Israel, and the United Kingdom.

Regional tensions escalated since Israel and the US launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, which have killed more than 1200 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
