Protests disrupt NYC parade over Gaza conflict
Pro-Palestinian protesters staged demonstrations in New York City, gathering in large numbers outside Macy's store and the Deutsche Bank Center. The protesters demanded an end to US military aid to Israel and expressed support for Palestinians, marching through streets while carrying Palestinian flags and protest signs.
Earlier, during the 98th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a group of protesters briefly disrupted the event by attempting to block the parade route ahead of the Ronald McDonald float. Demonstrators sat in the street under rain, displaying banners reading "Don't celebrate genocide" and "Arms embargo now!" Police responded with bicycle-mounted officers, making arrests without incident, though the exact number of detainees and pending charges were not disclosed.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch had stated before the parade that while protesters weren't expected, authorities were prepared with various security measures, including canines and drones. The NYPD maintained a presence behind metal barricades during demonstrations.
The protests come amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Israeli military operations have resulted in approximately 44,300 Palestinian deaths and widespread displacement, according to Gaza officials. The conflict began 13 months ago following a Hamas attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people and led to the capture of over 250 hostages.
The demonstrations reflect growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where most of the 2.3 million population has been displaced, leading to allegations of genocide at the World Court, which Israel denies. The conflict has sparked worldwide protests and debates about international military aid and humanitarian responsibilities.
