Syrians in Berlin celebrate Assad's ouster
Thousands of jubilant Syrians gathered in Berlin to celebrate the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, sounding car horns and waving Syrian opposition flags.
Syrians in Berlin continued their celebrations and took to the street on news of the ousting of Syria's Bashar al-Assad after rebels seized Damascus.
Germany has the largest Syrian diaspora in the European Union, more than one million strong.
Hundreds of thousands arrived in Germany after the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.
Many live in the capital, Berlin, notably in the working-class district of Neukoelln, where a spontaneous outpouring of relief.
Scores of people poured onto a main street in Neukoelln, waving the green, white, black and red flag of the Syrian opposition, before congregating on a square in the neighbouring district of Kreuzberg.
Many brought along children with their faces painted in the Syrian national colours, to voice their joy and relief.
Meanwhile around 150 people gathered in front of the Syrian Embassy in Madrid to celebrate what many described as a historic moment in their fight for freedom.
The crowd cheered and shouted "Freedom!" as a man, escorted by police, threw the Syrian government’s flag to the ground and hoisted the black, green, and white flag with three stars, symbolizing the Syrian rebel movement.
The jubilant scene was a powerful expression of defiance against the Assad regime, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing struggle for a free Syria.
Supporters of the rebels who ousted President Bashar al-Assad have entered several Syrian embassies abroad to hoist their flag, further demonstrating the growing momentum of the movement. In addition to the protest in Madrid, insurgents also entered the Italian envoy's residence in Damascus.
