Dutch students successfully tested a solar-powered mobile clinic in Kenya. Named Stella Juva, it was developed by Eindhoven University and partners to deliver medical services to remote Kenyan areas lacking healthcare and reliable electricity. Field tests involved driving Stella Juva over 800 kilometers across Kenya's Narok region, including unpaved roads to off-grid communities. During a two-day trial, the prototype demonstrated efficiency, generating more solar energy than consumed, even with medical equipment operating. Stella Juva is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools: ultrasound scanners, portable X-ray machines, and vaccine refrigeration units. This setup provides diagnostics directly to patients, overcoming barriers of distance, poor infrastructure, and unreliable power. The vehicle features a 50-kilowatt-hour battery and solar panels on its roof and sides. This sustainable system provides long operational range, enabling autonomous operation in distant locations. Experts commend Stella Juva as a significant advancement for sustainable healthcare in underserved regions, highlighting its potential to operate entirely off-grid without conventional fuel. It offers a practical model for expanding vital medical services and improving health outcomes in isolated communities. While the prototype returns to the Netherlands for development, the Kenya trial proved its viability. Focus shifts to securing funding and partnerships for deployment across Africa, addressing healthcare disparities with clean energy solutions.
