China achieves BCI surgery milestone

China completed the world's first commercial invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) surgery, a neurotechnology milestone. The procedure occurred at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai. This marks a major step in advancing its neurotechnology sector globally. On July 13, 2026, a coin-sized NEO device was implanted into a patient with impaired hand mobility from a spinal cord injury. Recovery is progressing well. Developed by Neuracle Medical Technology, the NEO device assists hand movement. Placed epidurally, on the brain's outer surface without penetration, this semi-invasive approach reduces risks. It records neural signals, translating them into movements for an assistive robotic glove. The BCI system gained approval from China's National Medical Products Administration on March 13, 2026, becoming the first invasive BCI commercially available. This highlights China's rapid progress, moving BCI technology from labs to patient care. China also introduced the nation's first commercial insurance policy for invasive BCI surgery, to accelerate adoption. This initiative underscores a coordinated push to foster the BCI industry. This advancement places China in direct competition with pioneers like Neuralink.
