Rafael Grossi faces criticism over nuclear reporting
In the aftermath of a recent and widely scrutinized interview with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a group of Iranian lawyers and legal professionals is reportedly circulating a petition calling for his removal from the post. The signatories allege that Grossi's candid admissions regarding the true status of Iran's nuclear ambitions have exposed what they describe as a deeply compromised tenure at the helm of the UN's nuclear watchdog.
The petitioners contend that Grossi is complicit — whether through negligence or deliberate misdirection — in a chain of events that contributed to the Israeli and American strikes on Iran during the so-called "12-day war." Central to their argument is the claim that IAEA reports issued under Grossi's oversight were based on flawed, manipulated, or selectively presented intelligence, and that these reports were subsequently used to justify the military campaign against Iranian soil.
According to those behind the petition, Grossi was either deliberately misled by external actors who fed the IAEA false or incomplete information, or he knowingly allowed misleading assessments to be published, thereby providing international cover for what the petitioners characterize as an act of aggression. In their view, the Director General's own recent statements — in which he is said to have acknowledged gaps or inaccuracies in the IAEA's reporting on Iran's nuclear program — constitute a de facto admission of institutional failure.
The move reflects deepening frustration within legal and political circles in Iran over the role of international bodies in the lead-up to the conflict, with the IAEA's credibility now squarely in question. Critics argue that an agency tasked with impartial oversight cannot be seen as a source of intelligence that serves the strategic interests of any particular state or alliance.
