Middle East Tensions Rise as Iran Targets Israel
World leaders urged restraint after Iran launched an unprecedented wave of missiles, rockets and attack drones against its arch foe Israel overnight, at a time the Gaza war has inflamed Middle East tensions.
Israel and its allies intercepted the vast majority of the over 300 incoming projectiles, the Israeli army said, reporting 12 people injured and no deaths, but the attack sharply heightened fears of an Israeli counter strike.
"Together we thwarted Iran's attack, " Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement.
"This was the first time that such a coalition worked together against the threat of Iran and its proxies in the Middle East."
Israel's top ally the United States also urged caution and calm.
Netanyahu met his war cabinet, formed amid the Gaza conflict sparked by the October 7 attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The attack on Nevatim Air Base in Israel from Iran's missile and drone operation base was in response to the reported missile attack on the Islamic Republic's consulate building in Damascus.
Iran pursues its legitimate and legal missile and drone responses in the Zionist regime, including - and perhaps one of the most important - hitting the Nevatim air base in southern Israel.
A base in the Negev desert near the city of Be'er Sheva, with a 3,400-meter runway, is the hangar and main base of Israel's F-35 fighters.
This base is about 1100 km away from the western borders of Iran, and the pictures published in the media show that heavy damages have been caused to this base.
Also, the Palestinian news agency reported that Iranian missiles hit the Ramon military base in the Negev. It is said that seven Iranian missiles hit this air base.
The Islamic republic launched more than 300 missiles, rockets and drones towards Israel, Israel's military said.
He also admitted to targeting an army base of this regime in the south of Israel.
