Modi makes historic visit to Cyprus

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia during a historic two-day visit, marking the first by an Indian head of government in over two decades. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment. Modi announced that India expects to finalize a free trade agreement with the European Union by the end of 2025, a goal supported by Christodoulides, who emphasized the importance of strengthening EU-India ties as Cyprus prepares to assume the EU presidency in early 2026.

The leaders discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a proposed sea and rail link aimed at boosting trade and promoting regional stability. Cyprus is positioned to serve as a strategic entry point to Europe and a transshipment hub for Indian trade. Modi and Christodoulides also agreed to enhance defense cooperation, including collaboration between their defense industries and initiatives in maritime security and cybersecurity.

In recognition of Modi's contributions to enhancing India-Cyprus relations, Christodoulides awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus's highest civilian honor. Modi reciprocated with handcrafted gifts, including a Kashmiri silk carpet and a silver clutch, symbolizing India's rich artisanal traditions.

Additionally, Modi engaged with the Indian diaspora in Limassol, emphasizing India's commitment to peace amid rising global tensions, stating, "This is not an era of war." The visit concluded with both nations agreeing to develop a comprehensive roadmap to provide strategic direction to their bilateral partnership, reflecting a mutual commitment to fostering economic growth and geopolitical cooperation. This visit underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and Cyprus, highlighting their shared interests in trade, defense, and regional stability.
