Australia and Vietnam deepen partnership

Australia and Vietnam deepened their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership following high-level talks in Canberra. Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Leaders issued a Joint Statement outlining future cooperation. This strategic alliance, elevated in March 2024, reflects converging strategic interests.It expands across political, defense, and security cooperation. Commitments include frequent high-level exchanges, and strengthened defense engagement via military training, maritime security, and information sharing. An updated Joint Vision Statement for defense emphasized peacekeeping and combating transnational crime. Leaders also voiced concern over developments in the South China Sea, stressing adherence to international law.Bilateral trade targets twenty billion US dollars. Agreements enhance trade, investment, supply chains, and cooperation in critical minerals, agriculture, and sustainable development. Market access expanded.Science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation are drivers, expanding into AI, semiconductors, quantum technology, and green hydrogen. Digital transition and cybersecurity efforts pursued. Education and people-to-people links are foundational, strengthening higher education, vocational training, and student exchanges. Climate, environment, and energy cooperation aims to accelerate renewable energy deployment and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Health cooperation strengthened. Direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Western Sydney International Airport are scheduled for early 2027.
