Brazil boosts security for BRICS summit

Brazil has mobilized extensive security measures in preparation for the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for July 6-7, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro. The Ministry of Defence has coordinated efforts among the Army, Air Force, and Navy to ensure safety during the event, with military forces deployed across various locations in the city. Approximately 17,000 security personnel, including 15,500 military police officers and 1,400 civil police agents, have been mobilized to maintain order.
The summit will bring together leaders from the 11-member BRICS bloc, including Brazil, India, China, Russia, and South Africa, as well as new members such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Indonesia. Notably, the summit will proceed without the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, allowing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a more prominent role in discussions.
To enhance security, Rio's state-of-the-art Operations Center will utilize advanced surveillance technologies, including artificial intelligence for real-time monitoring, facial recognition, license plate scanning, drone surveillance, and body cameras. Additionally, July 7 has been declared a public holiday to minimize disruptions, and Santos Dumont Airport will close to regular flights during the summit, redirecting operations to Galeão International Airport.
The summit's theme, “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” will focus on critical issues such as global health, climate change, artificial intelligence governance, and economic cooperation. These comprehensive security preparations reflect Brazil's commitment to hosting a secure and successful summit, highlighting its growing influence in global affairs.
