Deadly clashes at NCP rally in Gopalganj

Violence erupted during a rally organized by the youth-led National Citizen Party (NCP) in Gopalganj, resulting in four fatalities and numerous injuries. The rally aimed to commemorate the one-year anniversary of a student-led uprising that led to the ousting of long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tensions have been escalating since Hasina's departure to India following deadly protests last year, which have been compounded by delays in promised reforms and increasing political division.

Interim leader Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate, condemned the violence, stating that members of the NCP, police, and media were attacked during what was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration. He criticized the actions of Hasina's political party, the Awami League, and its student group, attributing the violence to them. Reports indicate that vehicles were vandalized, and individuals were assaulted during the clashes, which involved NCP supporters, Awami League activists, security forces, and journalists.

Local media confirmed the deaths and injuries, while police and hospital officials did not provide immediate comments. In response to the unrest, authorities imposed a curfew and deployed military forces to ensure the safety of NCP leaders. The Awami League claimed that one of its members was killed by army gunfire and accused the interim government of excessive force.

This incident underscores the fragile political climate in Bangladesh, particularly following the significant upheaval of the previous year, which resulted in a government crackdown that reportedly left over 1,400 dead. With elections approaching in 2026, the situation remains tense, reflecting deep-seated divisions within the country.
