Iran says 168 killed as conflict with U.S. and Israel escalates

Deadly strike hits school in Minab

The most devastating incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, February 28 at the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, southern Iran.

Iran’s Minister of Education Alireza Kazemi announced that 170 students and teachers have been martyred in US-Israeli attacks, which damaged nearly 20 schools and educational centers across the country.

Iranian authorities have finalized the death toll for the Minab strike at 168 people, the vast majority of whom were girls between the ages of 7 and 12.

At least 95 others were wounded. An investigation by Al Jazeera into the incident suggested the targeting was likely "deliberate.” Human rights advocates point out that the tragedy in Minab is not an isolated event, but rather part of a documented pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure by US and Israeli forces over several decades.

Footage showed rows of bodies with the personal belongings of victims, including blood-stained school books and bags at a morgue, while parents grieved and searched for their children.

Meanwhile Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the Israeli regime is deliberately attempting to expand the scope of the current Israeli-American-initiated war on Iran and drag the region into a broader conflagration. Speaking at a press conference held inside a school targeted by US-Israeli assaults in Tehran, Esmaeil Baghaei said destabilizing the region is “the project of the Zionist regime, and the United States was also drawn onto this path.”

“The Zionist regime will undoubtedly seek to exploit the situation, expand the scope of fire, and carry out acts of sabotage in regional countries in order to transform the war it has initiated together with the United States against Iran into a widespread regional conflict,” Baghaei said.

Israel launched a new wave of strikes on the Iranian capital and Iran responded with more missile barrages, pitching the Middle East and the global economy into deepening uncertainty.
