Spotify to label AI artist identities

Spotify to label AI artist identities

Spotify is introducing a new "AI Persona" badge to identify artists with AI-generated public identities, enhancing listener transparency. The badge will start appearing on artist profiles, in search results, and on track rows across playlists from mid-September. It signals an artist's identity (name, images, artwork) may be AI-generated. Artists can self-disclose as an AI Persona through Spotify for Artists. Spotify will also review profiles, especially those meeting audience thresholds. If a profile's identity appears AI-generated, Spotify will apply a "Likely AI Persona" badge. Artists receiving this badge will be notified and given the opportunity to confirm the label or appeal the decision. Music from profiles carrying the AI Persona badge will not be included in Spotify's editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default. This exclusion applies unless a listener actively follows the AI Persona, limiting organic discovery via recommendations. The AI Persona badge specifically addresses the artist's visual and public identity, not how music was produced. Spotify has a separate system, "AI Credits," for artists to disclose AI tool use in music creation. This highlights Spotify's multi-faceted approach to managing AI content. This move is part of a broader industry effort to establish guidelines and increase transparency for AI-generated music content. Other streaming services and organizations are also implementing systems to manage AI-created music and artist identities. This policy evolution reflects rapid AI advancements and the industry's commitment to protecting human artists and listener trust.
