In a dramatic turn of events, former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced violent opposition shortly after launching his new political party, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). Armed men disrupted a gathering of anti-Gachagua supporters, leading to chaos at a political rally held at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa in Mwiki, Kasarani sub county. Gunshots were fired, although no injuries were reported, and the service was temporarily halted.

Gachagua, who has denied allegations of self-enrichment and inciting ethnic hatred that led to his impeachment by parliament in October 2024, expressed his commitment to engaging with Kenyans over the next two years to build a significant political movement. He emphasized his integrity and honesty, distancing himself from past political alliances, particularly with President William Ruto, whose ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) he is set to challenge in the upcoming 2027 elections.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern for Gachagua, who has faced multiple confrontations since his impeachment. In December 2024, police disrupted a meeting he attended in Nyandarua County, using teargas and gunfire to disperse attendees. Earlier, in November, he was forced to flee a funeral service in Limuru after an attack left several mourners injured.

Gachagua has publicly claimed that his life is in danger, alleging a series of assassination attempts and accusing state security agencies of colluding with criminal gangs against him. He has called for the reinstatement of his security detail. The recent shooting incident highlights the escalating political tensions in Kenya and raises serious concerns about the safety of political figures and the overall stability of the country's political environment.
