Iran’s FM Abbas Araghchi visit Beijing
Discussions focus on ceasefire and Hormuz
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi visiting Beijing for high‑level talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi focused on bilateral cooperation and regional developments, notably maintaining a ceasefire and the status of the Strait of Hormuz. The trip follows Araghchi’s recent stops in Russia, Pakistan and Oman and comes amid heightened tensions after Iran closed the strait and the US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Chinese officials say the visit could help inject momentum into peace efforts; Beijing has criticised the US blockade but also expressed concern about Iran’s repeated closures of the vital waterway.
Tehran says it shut the strait in response to US‑Israeli military actions and seeks guarantees that any reopening will not expose it to renewed attacks. Araghchi is said to be seeking clarity from China on what support Beijing might offer—diplomatically and at the UN—especially ahead of planned US‑China summit talks. China, in turn, is expected to press Iran for assurances against escalation prior to high‑level diplomacy with Washington.
The visit underscores Tehran’s broader diplomatic outreach to key partners as international actors weigh mediation roles, while regional and logistical concerns—energy supplies, shipping safety and implications for global markets—remain central to negotiations.
