German rocket reaches orbit from Norway
German aerospace startup Isar Aerospace has successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from the Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway. This uncrewed mission marks the first time a privately developed launch vehicle from continental Europe has reached orbit and successfully deployed its payload. The Spectrum rocket carried five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment into low Earth orbit. This boosts Europe's independent access to space, a strategic goal supported by the European Space Agency to foster a diverse launch service sector. The launch strengthens Europe's position in the global satellite launch market, addressing a pressing need for expanded European launch options amid transitions in launch vehicles. The Spectrum rocket, a two-stage, liquid-fueled vehicle measuring 28 meters tall and 2 meters in diameter, is designed to deliver payloads of up to 1000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. This was Isar Aerospace's second Spectrum launch; an earlier 2025 test flight cleared the pad but did not achieve orbit. This latest success validates years of development and represents a breakthrough for the company and for European space. Officials from Norway and Germany hailed the launch as enhancing European security and autonomy in space, vital for applications like Earth observation, communication, and scientific research. Isar Aerospace plans to scale operations, with additional launch sites and numerous annual launches, positioning Europe more competitively in a global market. This underlines Europe's commitment to a robust, independent space infrastructure.
