Italy and France win Formula Wing world titles
The 2026 Formula Wing World Championships concluded in Istanbul, crowning new champions. Italy's Alessandro Tomasi secured the men's Formula Wing title, while France's Vaina Picot claimed the women's championship. The competition unfolded over five days, August 11-16, on the Bosphorus. Nearly one hundred entrants from five continents converged in Turkey's largest city for titles in this rapidly growing sailing discipline.The final day saw dramatic Medal Series races, determining podium finishers. Alessandro Tomasi demonstrated exceptional skill and strategy, securing his first major career title. He entered the Grand Final with a "one-bullet advantage," needing a single race victory to claim the championship. His compatriot Francesco Cappuzzo earned silver in the men's category, while France's Thomas Proust took bronze.In the women's fleet, Vaina Picot, despite battling health issues, delivered a dominant performance. She secured her inaugural Formula Wing world title, overcoming defending champion Maddalena Spanu of Italy, who earned silver. France's Kylie Belloeuvre completed the podium with bronze. The outcome underscored the escalating rivalry between Italy and France, as the two nations collectively swept all six medals, showcasing their prowess in this dynamic sport. The Formula Wing class emphasizes equal equipment, ensuring racing skill remains the primary determinant of success.
