'Magnificent' hexagonal coins minted for the Paris 2024 Olympics
The Paris mint is producing coins dedicated to the 2024 Olympics in Paris that are hexagonal in shape "because we want these to be the Games of the whole country, of the whole of France", explains the president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, Tony Estanguet. French people sometimes refer to France as the 'hexagon' because of the country's shape.
Following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the year 2021 officially marks the beginning of the countdown to the Paris Games.
It is the handing over of the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the previous Games that marks the starting point of a new era of Games in France.
Such an event is an opportunity for the Monnaie de Paris to continue to renew itself to offer ever more beautiful and innovative products. For the first time, the institute's presses are minting hexagonal coins, in tribute to the French territory.
The coins show a runner and the athletics stadium. The Eiffel Tower can also be seen in the background, symbolizing the city of Paris. This design is also featured on the commemorative €2 coins, available only in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated quality.
