Russian missile strike on Kharkiv kills senior officer
A Russian missile attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, hit a location used by policemen, killing a senior officer and injuring 30 other people, national police said.
Two missiles struck a police station in Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv, killing a policeman and wounding 30 other people, the national police chief said.
The city of Kharkiv lies around 30 km from the Russian border and has been pounded by Russian aerial attacks throughout the two-and-a-half-year war.
Four civilians were among the injured in the attack, a police statement on the Telegram messaging app said. It said S-300 missiles had been deployed by Russian forces.
Dmytro Chubenko, Spokesman of the Kharkiv region prosecutor's office, said: "At 4 pm Russians launched two ballistic rockets towards the city. One hit the Novoslovyanskiy district, the exact location of the second hit is the same area, but is being established. The damages to the civilian residential area are very significant. Two residential buildings have been seriously damaged, They are practically destroyed. It is possible that the same building was hit twice, hence the very serious damages. It is still being established. As far as the type of rocket is concerned, ballistic rockets S300 and S400 were used or Iskander M, this is being investigated now. "
Television footage showed rescue teams sifting through mounds of rubble.
Oleh Syniehubov, governor of Kharkiv region in Ukraine's northeast said some of the injured officers were in serious condition.
Kharkiv remained in Ukrainian hands throughout the initial unsuccessful advance by Russian forces on the capital, Kyiv, after their February 2022 invasion. The city has since remained a frequent target of Russian airstrikes.
According to statistics released by the authorities, in October, the city was struck 25 times, in 21 cases by guided bombs, with nine people killed including two children.
A strike on an apartment building on Oct 30 killed three people, including two children.
