Russian drones and missiles targeted Kyiv, resulting in at least two fatalities and 13 injuries, alongside significant damage to residential and non-residential buildings. This assault is part of a broader escalation in Russian attacks, with Ukrainian air defenses strained as they faced hundreds of drones and missiles, prompting many residents to seek shelter overnight. The head of Kyiv's military administration reported extensive fires and destruction across six of the city's ten districts, with videos capturing the aftermath of explosions, blown-out windows, and burned vehicles.

The attack on Kyiv followed a record number of drone strikes launched by Russia, marking a significant increase in hostilities. In addition to the capital, a Russian airstrike in the eastern town of Kostiantynivka resulted in three deaths and one injury, highlighting the ongoing violence in frontline areas. Ukrainian officials described the recent aerial assault as one of the most substantial since the conflict began, with approximately 400 drones and 18 missiles targeting various locations, including Lutsk. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted the majority of the 741 projectiles launched.

In response to the escalating violence, President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks and called for stronger international sanctions against Russia, as well as expedited military aid. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities from such large-scale assaults.

Zelensky is also participating in an international conference in Rome focused on Ukraine's postwar recovery, where discussions include securing additional funding for interceptor drones and air defense systems. The recent surge in Russian military actions underscores the ongoing volatility of the conflict and the critical need for international support to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.
