‘Son’ to leave Spurs after 10 landmark years
The 33-year-old bids farewell after 173 goals and Europa League glory
Heung‑min Son has announced he will leave Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the summer, bringing his landmark ten‑year tenure at the club to a close. The 33‑year‑old made the announcement at a press conference in Seoul, where he described the moment as “one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made in my football career.” Son said he joined Spurs at age 23 and is departing as a man proud of all he achieved in north London, having spent a decade giving his all on and off the pitch.
Over 454 appearances in all competitions, Son scored 173 goals—placing him fifth on Tottenham’s all‑time scoring list—and won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021–22 as well as the FIFA Puskás Award in 2020. Last season he captained Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years, the UEFA Europa League, lifting the title as the new club captain under manager Ange Postecoglou, who stepped down at the end of the campaign.
At 33 and under contract until 2026, Son declined to name his next destination, though British media have linked him with a move to MLS side Los Angeles FC. Manager Thomas Frank praised Son as a “true Spurs legend in every aspect,” and said the timing of his departure—on the back of a trophy win—was fitting for such a long-serving player.
Son’s emotional farewell came in a friendly against Newcastle United at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium, in front of 64,773 fans. He was given a guard of honour by both Spurs and Newcastle players and was visibly moved when substituted in the 65th minute. Frank and opposing boss Eddie Howe both praised his professionalism and the impact he had on teammates and opponents alike.
The announcement marks the end of an era at Tottenham: Son transformed the club’s global profile, particularly in Asia, and became a role model for footballers across his continent.
