Syrian security forces deployed military reinforcements to Latakia following a deadly attack by fighters linked to ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. Security personnel were seen preparing for deployment, with one member, Abu Daher, declaring they were heading to coastal areas to combat "remnants of al-Assad" who had targeted government security forces.

At least 13 security personnel were killed in clashes in the coastal region of Jableh, according to Syria TV, though the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported higher casualties, including 16 police officers, 28 Assad loyalists, and three civilians. The regional security chief described the attack as well-planned and executed by "remnants of the Assad militias."

The violence represents a significant escalation against the government since Islamist insurgents led by Sharaa's Hayat Tahrir al-Sham overthrow Assad and seize power. In response to growing unrest, a new coalition called the Military Council for the Liberation of Syria emerged in March 2025, composed of former officers and Assad loyalists aiming to "liberate all Syrian territory from occupying forces."

Government authorities had already launched security operations in Latakia on March 4 following the killing of two Internal Security Forces members by pro-Assad gunmen. Intense clashes have been reported in several neighborhoods, including Al-Da'tour, where exchanges of gunfire have become common.

The ongoing violence has severely disrupted civilian life, with residents reporting nightly gunfire and widespread insecurity. Despite government efforts to stabilize the region, organized militant groups continue to pose a significant challenge to restoring order. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the need for a resolution that ensures stability for affected populations.
