China and Egypt deepen strategic ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a state visit to Egypt, his first in a decade, underscoring their deepening strategic partnership and 70 years of diplomatic relations. President Xi is discussing enhanced cooperation and regional issues with President el-Sisi. New agreements are expected, building on existing economic ties. His 2016 visit saw over twenty agreements across sectors, including significant Chinese investments of fifteen billion dollars. Egypt plays a pivotal role in China's Belt and Road Initiative, leveraging the Suez Canal, a vital waterway connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe, as a key gateway for Chinese economic expansion. The China-Egypt Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, established in 2008, is a cornerstone, attracting businesses. Cooperation includes major infrastructure projects like the Suez Canal Corridor and the new administrative capital, with Chinese companies instrumental in building key components. Beyond infrastructure, the partnership extends to space technology, defense, and artificial intelligence. China's Foreign Ministry describes relations as "at their best," highlighting commitment to strengthening bonds. For Egypt, deepened ties offer development financing, infrastructure modernization, and technological advancement, aligning with Vision 2030. This collaboration also provides Egypt a platform to assert a more sovereign foreign policy. The visit solidifies China's influence in the Middle East and North Africa, showcasing a durable partnership.
