Cuba tests efficacy of its Covid-19 vaccine for recovering patients in Italy
Cuba is testing the efficacy of its Soberana Plus Covid-19 vaccine in Italy, especially on recovering coronavirus patients over the age of 19, says the president of the state-run pharmaceutical company BioCubaFarma, Eduardo Martinez.
Soberana (Spanish for "sovereign") 2 is a conjugate vaccine - meaning an antigen is fused to a carrier molecule to bolster the vaccine's stability and effectiveness.
The results from the first clinical trials were "encouraging" and "very important", the Cuban government hopes to give the vaccine to everyone on the island by the end of the year.
Cuba is also planning to have in the order of 100 million doses during 2021 and will dedicate an important part of these doses to the full immunization of its own citizens.
