Ebrahim Raisi becomes 8th president of Iran, vowing to "tyrannical" U.S. sanctions
Ebrahim Raisi is now officially the 8th president of the Islamic Republic of Iran as his mandate was endorsed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at a ceremony in Tehran, on Tuesday.
Weeks after the ex-Judiciary chief won the country’s 13th presidential election by a landslide, he was endorsed by Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, during a ceremony that marked the end of President Hassan Rouhani's administration.
In a decree that was read out to the audience, the Leader called on the new president to work toward activating the country’s capabilities and paving the way for a leap forward in all sectors, focusing on the economy.
In response Ebrahim Raisi used his speech to promise to lift "tyrannical" U.S. sanctions on Iran. The new president put improving the living standards of Iranians at the heart of his speech and reiterated that his administration would “not tie the nation’s standard of living to the will of foreigners.”
After the ceremony Hassan Rohani handed over power to Ebrahim Raisi as he left his office wishing the new president all the best in “solving the problems that the country is facing.”
The inauguration ceremony for President Ebrahim Raisi will take place on Thursday, August 5, in the courtyard of Iran’s Parliament.
According to Iran’s official news agency, 115 high-ranking officials, including 10 heads of state, 20 parliament speakers and 11 foreign ministers will be attending the ceremony.
