FIFA leader proposes reform talks
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has initiated discussions on reforms to its decision-making processes. This follows criticism over a recently abandoned plan to introduce private investment into major tournaments. In a letter to member associations, Infantino proposed a "consultation" process, addressing concerns about governance and transparency.Two key initiatives are proposed. First, an independent external review of FIFA's governance framework for strategic initiatives is suggested, aiming to recommend improvements. Second, a direct, structured, and time-limited consultation with confederations, member associations, and relevant stakeholders is proposed. This aims to strengthen FIFA's decision-making, enhance transparency, foster participation, and improve accountability in strategic projects.The letter comes amidst pressure on Infantino, as some European football bodies called for his resignation following the private investment plan controversy. Infantino, facing re-election in March next year, emphasized that FIFA's democratic processes, independence, and sporting authority were never for sale. He acknowledged that the shelved investment proposal caused concern due to premature public disclosure.These proposals will be considered at the FIFA Council meeting on October 15. The initiative aims to rebuild trust and ensure FIFA's operations align with the global football community's expectations.
